W. Vernie Reed Scholarship

2024 Scholarship Information

In 1981 the W. Vernie Reed Scholarship Fund was established as a living memorial to the late W. Vernie Reed, General Secretary-Treasurer of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, who represented our Northwest Region. Since that time, the scholarship fund has awarded over 500 scholarships, totaling over $1 million dollars, to our members, their children and grandchildren from various Local Unions throughout the Region. We should all take great pride that we have established such a fund in memory of one of

LIUNA's past leaders, who fought so hard for every LIUNA member, Local Union and District Council.

Through the generosity of Brother Reed’s friends and associates, a self perpetuating fund will provide a program of yearly scholarships to assist eligible worthy students in furthering their four (4) year undergraduate education. The first award was made in the Spring of 1981. Scholarships are usually awarded before July.

LABORERS RISING

LABORERS RISING is a local union membership engagement initiative that will move members to get involved in their Union. By creating a base of member activists, we can build power for our LIUNA families, our communities, and our Union! The foundation for the program is laborer to laborer conversations while harnessing our members power to build solidarity. With the help of our members and their families, we can be successful with all kinds of challenges and opportunities in the future.

Building Trades National Medical Screening Program

The Building Trades National Medical Screening program is designed to identify health problems caused by hazardous substances that workers may have been exposed to while working on a Department of Energy site.

During this Program, you will complete a work history interview and a limited medical screening examination to identify risk factors for diseases that might develop in the future. We will also provide you with information on the risks and how to reduce them.

This Program is entirely voluntary and without cost to you. You will not be compensated for your participation. However, you may benefit in increased knowledge about your personal health. Your participation may also benefit future workers by helping to identify trends in groupings of information that may be important to their health and well-being. This Program is funded for a limited time. We cannot assure that it will be continued in the future, or that there will be another program to take its place.
